- As a kid Jake read fairly frequently and read books that were above his reading level. Starting in high school, his reading level began to go down due to the required reading assignments in his honors english courses. While these books were important to read and understand, Jake did not particularly care for these books and slowly began to stop reading for enjoyment after his freshman year. Jake still enjoys reading but is often not motivated to read due to the amounts of reading or homework honors and AP classes bring. He enjoys books about crime and sports as well as most non-fiction books that have to do with history. Jake can often get excited by a book by the first few chapters but eventually gets discouraged by the length, becoming less interested. This results in not finishing as many books as he starts, generally medium sized books are good for him, allowing to capture the larger picture and imagine specific details for himself. Jake enjoys reading about the news very much and frequently reads articles on multiple news platforms for sports, politics and global events. With Jake’s recent downturn in reading he doesn’t really possess much stamina for reading for long periods of time and needs to work on that for college. Looking forward through the year, Jake will most likely rekindle his like for reading on his free time, most likely to start to pick up more challenging books as the school year goes by.
- I am currently reading a book, the title is Tycoons
- I read 4 whole books and read parts of a fifth
- I probably read about 4 or 5 books
- I don’t really have a favorite author because I tend to bounce around and not read series, however of the series I’ve read Rick Riordan would be my favorite
- About 175 books at my place
I am a reader who is pretty picky about what I enjoy reading, however once I find a book I want to read I dive in and read it cover to cover easily. I like reading biographies and autobiographies because to me it allows me to see a different perspective and opinion on the world that can be very eye opening. I tend to not enjoy fiction because I am a very realistic person typically, and tend not to enjoy reading poetry.I have grown in one major way, which is my heightened ability to see a point of view out of my shoes, if the author has a very different approach to life or viewpoint on a certain issue I don’t write it off as being wrong nor do I automatically go along with it because I have respect to the author. This summer I practically became better at this after reading lots of news reports like the events in Charleston. Being Jewish I will firmly say I will never put myself in the shoes of a Nazi or White Supremacist, but I would look at the argument for free speech or the other addendums to the first amendment. Besides this new openness to opposition, I have honestly not grown very much as a reader recently.- Jake is a writer, he learned to write in kindergarten and through his parents who both teach at CMU. When he was younger he would practice writing as a skill to be better prepared for high school. Once Jake got into high school he began to enjoy writing research papers, and opinion pieces. People learn to write through practice like most things, people's writing styles develop over the years that will eventually replicate their personalities. People write to express themselves, through writing people can articulate their ideas with more detail. People write to note a big experience or event, doing this dates the event and allows people later in time to experience it. People write to put other people in their shoes, if someone goes to a museum or concert and wants to explain that trip, then writing is a good vessel to display that. In order for people to write well they first must understand what they want to write about, if they don't know what they want to write about, their essay or writing piece will be messy and unorganized. Once people know what they want to write about they then must know the style of writing they want to display to the reader. I really enjoy writing research papers, I find it interesting to research something and construct an argument. I don't enjoy writing fiction, I also don't enjoy reading fiction, the two are probably connected. I usually write about current events or events close to me. I also use topics that I do outside of school like basketball, BPA and others to write about. As a writer I like to have people tell me that I can see it from a different point of view, allowing me to build a bigger argument or bring up a point that would have gone undetected. Jake feels like he is a very good writer for his age, having the ability to look at complex situations or discussions and lay them out in an essay.
